Solution-based thin-film transistors for cellular interface applications |

Recently, solution-based thin film transistors (TFTs) composed of organic or metal-oxide semiconductors in conjunction with high-k dielectrics or ionic liquid as gate dielectrics have shown great potential in cell-based sensors. For this kind of applications, the proposed device architectures require two critical prerequisites: 1) low voltage operation and 2) decent biocompatibility. In this presentation, we report two types of solution-processed TFTs based on metal oxides and organic semiconductors. Each device configurations support not only low-voltage operations below 1-2 volt but also excellent culture viability of both dividing cell lines and neuronal cells. We expect that our device layouts will allow for potential applications in cell-based bio-sensors ranging from neuro-electronic interfaces to implantable cancer detectors. |
