Application of PVA/PAAc/MWCNT composite hydrogel as electrochemical actuator for artificial muscle |

Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/poly(acrylic acid) (PAAc)/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) composite hydrogels were prepared by free-radical polymerization. Acrylic acid was added to the PVA aqueous solution containing the cross-linkers for both PVA and acrylic acid in order to have better overall mechanical properties. MWCNTs were incorporated in order to give both better electroactive and mechanical properties. PVA/PAAc/MWCNT composite hydrogels were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and universal testing machine. The electrochemical actuator behavior of the composite hydrogels varied depending on the pH. PVA/PAAc/MWCNT composite hydrogels bent toward the anode in the pHs over 4.7 and bent toward the cathode in the pHs below 4.7. |
