Hemostasis is the most important process in healing a wound. Hemostatic agents have drawn much attention, but they are still needed to improve the hemostatic ability to instantly stop bleeding. Polyphosphates (polyPs) released from platelets are one of the most important hemostatic factors. PolyPs accelerate the hemostatic cascade, make fibrin clots stronger, and serve as physical barriers to block bleeding. We mimicked polyPs to make efficient hemostatic agents by conjugating phosphate functional groups on chitosan backbone. The hemostatic ability of phsophorylated chitosan (Chi-P) was improved over 2 times than one of unmodified chitosan. Chi-P was more stable than polyP, which are bonded via the phosphoanhydride bonds and easily degraded by moisture in air or water in our body. Chi-P was a more efficient hemostatic agent and was more suitable for emergency conditions due to its much easier preparation and longer storage lifetime. |
