Self-Assembled Shape-Anisotropic Block Copolymer Particles from Evaporative Emulsions |

Theoretical prediction and systematic modulation of shape-anisotropy of polymeric particles is of great importance in tuning their shape-dependent properties. Here, we demonstrate a precise control of aspect ratio (AR) of convex lens-shaped block copolymer (BCP) particles from the solvent evaporation-driven self-assembly of BCPs within emulsion droplet. Convex lens-shaped PS-b-P4VP particles were produced in the range of several hundred nanometers to a few microns, where the particles having a major axis diameter of 5 μm showed extremely flat shape with an AR of 15 or more. To understand the formation of anisotropic shape, a simple free energy model that embodies the competition between bulk elasticity of BCP cylinders and particle/medium interfacial energy was developed. Importantly, a deep insight into the entropic energy originating from the conformational change of the polymer chain upon particle deformation was performed according to the variation of BCP structure. |
