Eckols are a subclass of phlorotannis with fused-ring structures that have shown great medicinal potentials. Since they were discovered in 1980s, until the end of the 20th century, only very limited medicinal information were available including antibacterial, antioxidant and anti-plasmin inhibitory activities. Since 2005, a number of their bioactivities have been discovered to drive commercialization in nutraceutical and cosmetic industries. Through in vitro and in vivo studies, they have been shown to have excellent safety profiles and pharmacological potentials in many important areas including inflammatory diseases, cardiovascular diseases, metabolic diseases, cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. This presentation reviews the molecular structural aspects and biological activities of this unique class of marine phytochemicals and their synthetic derivatives which show tremendous potentials in the future medicinal science and industry. |
