Self-healing property can effectively increase stability and lifetime of polymeric materials which are vulnerable to long-term exposure to chemical/physical fatigue. Contrary to earlier studies for irreversible self-healing, repeatable self-healing using specific reversible reactions have been focused. The representative system is based on the thermally reversivle Diels-Alder reaction. In this report, the change of self-healing properties of Diels-Alder based self-healable polymeric materials by electron density difference of furan moieties was studied. First, a series of electron deficient and rich furan functionalized methacrylate copolymers were synthesized by free radical polymerization and their Diels-Alder/retro Diels-Alder reaction with maleimide cross-linker was conducted and characterized via 1H-NMR, infraredspectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. Then self-healing properties of polymer adducts were studied by using optical microscope and universal testing machine |
