Ionomeric thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) was prepared by melt mixing of maleated ethylene vinyl acetate (mEVA) having a small degree of crystallinity with zinc oxide (ZnO) and stearic acid. The structure, thermal, mechanical and rheological properties of the ionomeric TPE were characterized by FTIR, DSC, DMA, tensile test and dynamic rheometer analysis. The results revealed that the ionomeric TPEs exhibit a physically-crosslinked structure due to a presence of ionic clusters consisting of zinc neutralized carboxylated salt which was formed by the reaction of maleic anhydride groups of mEVA with ZnO during the melt mixing. It was also observed that the ionomeric TPE exhibit an excellent thermally-triggered shape memory effect when the temporarily fixed shape is heated above crystalline melting temperature of EVA. |
