The use of carbon dioxide for the preparation of polymers is an excellent option from an economical and, in particular, from an ecological point of view, because it is a renewable, abundant, cheap, and nontoxic source of functional carbon unit. Ethylene carbonates are typical examples of reagents (monomers) used in polymer syntheses which are readily available from ethylene oxide and carbon dioxide. Unlike the most carbonic acid derivatives, ethylene carbonates are not prepared from phosgene. We report the use of ethylene carbonates for the preparation of aliphatic hyperbranched polycarbonates with special emphasis on water-soluble property. |
