제목 Novel Y-Type Nonlinear Optical Polyesters and Their Properties
초록 Polymeric materials with nonlinear optical (NLO) activity are considered as a promising candidate for making electro-optic (EO) devices, mainly because they offer many advantages such as light weight, chemical resistance, and good processability to form EO devices.1 There are tremendous challenges in designing polymers of large NLO effects. Polyesters2 and polyamides containing the chromophoric main chain were prepared. Polyesters with the NLO-chromophores in the side chain were also reported.3-4 Main-chain NLO polymers have good thermal stability of dipole alignments, but they often do not dissolve in organic solvents, and the intractability of them make them impossible to fabricate stable noncentrosymmetric films. Side-chain NLO polymer systems have the advantages such as good solubility, homogeneity and high level of NLO chromophore relative to the main-chain systems, but they often suffer from poor stability of dipole alignments at high temperatures. In this work we prepared novel polyesters containing dioxynitrostilbenyl unit as a NLO-chromophore. 2,3-Di-(2-hydroxyethoxy)-4-nitrostilbene (3) was prepared and condensed with terephthaloyl chloride, adipoyl chloride and sebacoyl chloride to yield novel Y-type polyesters (4-6) containing the NLO-chromophores dioxynitrostilbenyl groups, which are parts of the polymer backbones (Scheme 1). The chemical structure of the polymers was identified by 1H NMR, IR spectra, and elemental analysis. All the analytical data were matched well with the expected chemical structure. Polymers 4-6 were soluble in common organic solvents such as acetone and DMF. These polymers showed a thermal stability up to 300oC in TGA thermograms with glass transition temperature (Tg) values in the range of 95-121oC in DSC thermograms. Study on the SHG activities, film morphology, and electro-optic properties of the polymers are in progress.
