Crystal Engineering of Organic Methylquinolinium Crystals with Various Benzenesulfonate Anions for Photonic Applications |

We investigated ionic-type electro-optic crystals based on HMQ (2-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxystyryl)-1-methylquinolinium) cation and various benezenesulfonate anions. Acentric HMQ-T (2-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxystyryl)-1-methylquinolinium 4-methylbenzenesulfonate) and HMQ-OH (2-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxystyryl)-1-methylquinolinium 4-hydroxybenzenesulfonate) crystals exhibited large macroscopic nonlinear optical and electro-optic properties in the solid state. In order to obtain HMQ crystals suitable for THz wave generation, bulk HMQ crystals were grown by slow and rapid cooling methods in solution. HMQ-T and HMQ-OH showed acentric monoclinic space group Pn and Pc, respectively. To modify the crystal characteristics of HMQ crystals, various solution growth methods in different solvents were investigated. Efficient THz wave generation based on HMQ crystals by controlling crystal thickness were demonstrated at a pumped wavelength of 800 nm. |
