The core-superabsorbent polymer (CSAP) comprising of dicarboxylic acid, cellulose, vinyl sulfonic acid, and acrylic acid was synthesized through radical aqueous polymerization. The synthesized CSAP was treated with surface-crosslinking agent, 1,4-butanediol (BD) while mixing with water-methanol mixture to improve the gel strength of CSAP. Hydroxyl functional groups in BD participated in esterification reaction with the residual carboxyl groups in DA and AA. It is important to select the appropriate ratio of water-methanol mixture in the surface-crosslinking solution and the optimal surface-crosslinking treatment time because it is a significant factor in determining the depth at which BD penetrates into the CSAP. As a results, improved performances of the synthesized surface-crosslinked SAP were obtained. |
