Tailoring surface properties of fabrics and textiles is of importance for military applications such as uniforms and personal protective equipment. In particular, textiles that repel water, oil, and chemical warfare agents reduce cleaning, resist staining, and extend the lifetime of textiles. Such unique hydrophobic structures for self-cleaning textiles can be created with a combination of micro/nano structures and low-surface- energy chemical substances. In this study, we created micro/nano-scale surface roughness on cotton fabric by growing UiO-66-NH2, a nanoporous metal-organic framework (MOF). The surface was then coated with low surface energy, aminopropylisooctyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (O-POSS), which helps the cotton surface's ability to resist wetting. |
