Preparation and properties of nanocrystalline europium nitride |

Nanocrystalline europium nitride (EuN) was successfully prepared by the thermal-decomposition of amide (Eu(NH2)2). The europium amide (Eu(NH2)2) was prepared using liquid ammonia (metal-ammonia solution), in other words we succeeded n dissolving europium in ammonia by the metal atom cocondensation technique. The formation processes of nanocrystalline nitride was characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) combined with temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) techniques. The amide was first decomposed to form imide with evolution of NH3 and subsequently the conversion into nitride occurred. The surface areas increased markedly with increase in temperatures and went up to ≒100m2/g upon thermal decomposition of Eu(NH2)2 to EuN around 350 ℃. Such nanosized europium nitride (EuN) readily reacted with ammonia within few minutes even at room temperature when brought into contact with ammonia gas. The properties of ammonia taken up by the nitride were evaluated by TPD and XRD. |
