Microcapsules have been widely used as carriers for the delivery of various active ingredients including cosmetics, food additives, organic molecules, and pharmaceuticals. Although a variety of microcapsule formulations have been reported previously, undesired leakage of encapsulated actives is typically observed. This drawback limits the versatile usage of microcapsules in practical applications. In this work, we report a microfluidic approach to prepare wax-based microcapsules with defect-free shell to achieve highly efficient encapsulation, retention, and on-demand release of various actives. By utilizing the hermetic sealing property of the palm oil, we encapsulate broad range of cargoes including water, polyol, and ethanol in a single platform, which have been difficult to achieve. The implications of these microcapsules with hermetic sealing as well as temperature-responsive property have been further extended to advanced cosmetic applications which demands encapsulation and retention of complex and delicate actives until external stimuli is applied. |
