Core-Shell Structured Star Polymers and Silica particles as Effective Additives for Epoxy Toughening |

Epoxy polymers have low toughness and impact resistance due to highly crosslinked structures. Toughening of such brittle polymers via incorporation of a dispersed elastomeric phase is well-known as an effective method to improve mechanical properties. In this study, we propose star polymers and silica particles as additives for epoxy toughening. The star polymers were composed of polymethyl acrylate arm and polybutyl acrylate arm and various cores such as divinylbenzene or butadiene. The silica particle was composed of epoxide ring branch on the surface and silane core. In these structures, the PMA arm and epoxide ring branch can act as an epoxy-miscible shell to enhance the dispersion of these additives within epoxy resins. The resulting morphologies were characterized by TEM and various nanostructures such as spheres and vesicles were observed within the cross-linked epoxy matrix. Also, we measured the lap shear strength and impact peel strength to confirm the toughening effect |
