Effective conversion processs of lignocellulosic bioamss into levulinic acid using pretreatment and hydrochloric acid |

Various agricultural wastes including rice straw, corn stover, sweet sorghum bagasse, and Miscanthus were pretreated for delignification using green liquor (GL; Na2CO3-Na2S). Such a pretreament effectively removed the lignin content by 88-90%. After pretreatment the glucan contents increased to 55-78% in those biomass. GL-pretreated biomass was converted to levulinic acid (LA) under acid hydrothermal reaction conditions (150-170°C). Under the optimal conditions, the yields of LA from pretreated biomass were 17-20%. The effet of GL pretreatment reaction on the yield of LA was more pronounced in case of corn stover compared to the other biomass. |
