Application of solid cholesteric nematic liquid crystal laser |

Cholesteric nematic liquid crystal (CNC) made by mixing nematic crystal and chiral dopant shows photonic band gap (PBG) due to a repeated pitch which reflects a specific wavelength. UV-curable regularly-sized CNC droplets were successfully prepared by a microfluidic method with RM (merck) and CB15 (Synthon). The solid-state CNC particles showed a certain color at the center with cross-talk patterns when they were close enough to communicate each other and observed under reflection mode. These solid-state CNC particles were examined for an omni-directional laser by adding a dye with its fluorescent emission overlapping with the edge of PBG. This self-assembled solid-state CNC particles may show reflection pattern in the 3D space due to their interferences among the laser beams. |
