제목 MicroscopicStudies ofPolystyrene Impregnated Mortars
초록 Polymer Impregnated Concrete (PIC) is prepared by impregnating polymer into precast cement concrete and offers improved durability as well as flexibility to building structures. Micro structural studies of cement concrete along with its composites with polymers helps gain insights into the porosity and morphology of the composites. These studies also reveal the nature of ions that leach out of the matrix when exposed to chemical environments. In the study presented herein, styrene was impregnated into precast cement mortar (OPC) and polymerized in situ by microwaves as also by conventional thermal methods. Post polymerization porosity data revealed a great reduction in the size of the voids in the cement matrix. This was supported by results obtained from the scanning electron micrographs of the PIC and OPC samples. It was also confirmed that the porosity of OPC increased to around 33% on prolonged (28 days) exposure to hydrochloric acid. Though this parameter increased even in the case of PIC specimens due to cement particles undergoing reactions with hydrochloric acid, it was far less than that reported for the OPC specimens. Further the molecular weight of polystyrene in the PIC was found to be comparatively higher when microwaves were employed to effect polymerization.
