Vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFB) attract increasing attention for energy storage system applications. However, their electrochemical performances have not been intensively analyzed due to the lack of a proper reference electrode. In this work, we report the design of dynamic hydrogen electrode (DHE) for VRFB, which enables in-situ monitoring of positive and negative electrode potential in stable and reliable manner. Due to the presence of multiple redox couples at the reference electrode inserted in VRFB membrane, the adjustment of the current flowing through DHE is the key factor to maintaining stable and steady hydrogen reduction reaction at the DHE during a repeated charge and discharge. With the optimized DHE design, the electrochemical properties of positive and negative electrode can be individually analyzed. Therefore, this work on the design of DHE provides an effective platform for VRFB researches. |
