The detection of heavy metal ions is highly significant in many applications, including environmental monitoring and waste management. In this work, we employed electrically conductive membrane composites to detect heavy metal ions in water. First, cellulose membranes were coated with conducting polymers by using vapor-deposition polymerization. Conducting polymers have reversible doping/dedoping process, which allows the electrochemical detection of heavy metal ions. Second, polysulfone membranes with controlled pore sizes were prepared via a phase inversion process. Because polysulfone has advantages such as excellent mechanical properties and chemical stability, it was used as the support for the conducting polymer/cellulose membrane. The resulting conductive membrane composites displayed good sensing performance for various heavy metal ions in aqueous solution. |
