A wastewater treatment plant(WWTP) recently had failures in bioassy tests. There are several industries discharging wastewater to the City sewer. There appears to be no consensus on what caused the toxicity in the St. Croix falls WWTP. To look for the cause of toxicity, the toxicity screening tests were performed using the Reverse Electron Transfer(RET) assay and an electrolytic respirometer with various wastewater samples taken. The Straus wastewater was found to be most toxic to trickling filter(TF) biomass among the wastewater samples tested - Domestic sewage, Home life domestic wastewater, Hospital wastewater, Mills wastewater, East Straus wastewater, and other industrial wastewater. Other industrial wastewater does not appear to contribute to the toxic effect on TF biomass. When the ratio of Straus wastewater to biomass volumes was 0.7, Straus wastewater inhibited nitrification. |
