The synthesis of polymer microspheres with 1 – 10 microns in diameter has received much attention due to their applications in electronic, electric, and bio-related areas. Dispersion polymerization has been known to be useful to prepare such polymer particles in a single step. Since alcohols are used as the medium for the polymerization, alcohol-soluble stabilizers including poly(vinyl pyrrolidone), hydroxypropyl celluose, and poly(acrylic acid) have been frequently utilized. In this study, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) was employed as the steric stabilizer in dispersion polymerization of styrene in methanol. The PVP concentrations was increased from 0.5 to 20 wt% relative to styrene, and the polymerization characteristics were investigated. |
