Polycaprolactone(PCL) is compatible with many processing techniques and used in many different commercial applications. The modification of thermal and mechanical properties of PCL matrix by hybridization with silica and clay is of commercial interest. In this study, we fabricate PCL-based nanocomposites with clay or silica via melt compounding method. The effect of polymer morphology and silicate superstructures on glass transition temperature, stiffness, and toughness of nanocomposites were examined as a function of clay/silica content. We used cloisite 30B as a clay. Aerosil 200, aerosil R812, and NCO or glycidol surface-modified silica were used as silicas. Thermal and mechanical, and other properties were examinced with dynamic mechanical thermal analysis(DMTA), differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) and Fourier-Transform infrared(FT-IR) spectroscopy and so on. It was found that PCL is properly reinforced with clay and silica in terms of mechanical, dynamic mechanical properties.
