We studied the effect of the solvent selectivity of toluene/THF mixtures at f (wt % of toluene in toluene/THF) = 0, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 on micellar morphologies of PS-b-P4VP via transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The morphologies of micelles of the block copolymers could be controlled by varying copolymer composition and f. The morphologies of micelles changed from sphere to worm-like cylinder, then to complete cylinder and finally to vesicles with increasing f. The micelles with these morphologies were loaded with HAuCl4.3H2O to form a complex (pyridine HAuCl4) in the solvent mixtures. Subsequently, reduction of the complex with hydrazine resulted in well-defined gold nanoparticles in core. The size and morphologies of micelles, hybrid micelles and gold nanoparticles were investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and UV/visible spectroscopy. The possible mechanism leading to these morphological changes was also discussed. |
