Effects of Electron Beam Irradiation and Alkali Treatment on the Structure of Natural Fibers |
초록 |
Recently, natural fibers have increasingly considered as reinforcements of environmentally friendly biocomposites. The properties of a natural fiber are related to its internal structure and chemical properties. Natural fiber is usually treated with alkali solution for removing impurities from the surface before applying to the reinforcement of biocomposite. Electron beam irradiation (EBI) is also an alternative method for surface-treatment of natural fiber. The EBI treatment to the natural fiber has advantages of easy, dry, and less energy consuming process, comparing with a wet process of natural fiber with alkali solution. In the present study, the effects of alkali solution and EBI treatment on henequen and cotton natural fibers with different cellulose contents are investigated. The result indicates that the EBI treatment decreases the alpha cellulose component but increases the beta cellulose of both natural fibers with increasing the EBI dose, resulting from random chain scission. Also, the decrease of the alpha cellulose is much more severe in cotton than in henequen and the alpha cellulose of henequen does not change with irradiating electron beam lower than 50 kGy. On the contrary, the alkali treatment for henequen does not show any significant change in the alpha and beta cellulose contents. The thermal and morphological properties of EBI- or alkali-treated natural fibers are also explored. |
