Silica nano-particle filled poly (ethylene 2, 6-naphthalate) (PEN) composites were prepared via melt-compounding at various mixing conditions, such as filler type and filler content. Three types of modifier were used to improve wettability and dispersibility of the silica nano-particles on the PEN matrix, and filler concentrations were limited to a maximum of 5 wt% to minimize filler agglomeration and networking. Methanol take-up, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), and contact angle experiment were performed to verify surface modification of silica nano-particles. In tensile experiments, surface modified silica nano-particle filled PEN composites markedly improve tensile modulus and strength compare to pristine PEN, and the tensile performance of the composites was highly dependent on loading rate. In this research, several theoretical models which could evaluate modulus of composite materials was adopted and the results were compared to experimental values to analyze effective silica fraction.
