Improved scratch resistance of polycarbonate sheet by photopolymerization of multi-functional acrylate coating solution |

Multi-functional acrylic monomers are coated on the polycarbonate (PC) substrate and then exposed to ultra-violet (UV) light to form scratch-resistant layer. Network density and flexibility have been tuned by changing compositions of multi-functional monomers and polymer constituents. Adhesion and surface property of coating layer have been examined. Pencil hardness of PC sheet has increased to H, 2H, 4H at a coating thickness of 20, 30, 40 μm, respectively. No distinct change was observed when accumulated UV exposure was increased from 750 to 2,000 mJ/cm2. High transparency at around 90% was maintained even after weathering test. From the SEM images, adhesion test, and contact angle analysis, it was realized that the coating solution had a good compatibility and adhesion to the PC sheet. |
