Poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate)(PHEMA) hydrogels modified with various comonomer such as NVP, MA, GMA, GDMA and GMMA were prepared in order to improve the suface wettability and tensile strength for soft contact lens. The hydrogels were synthesized by a free-radical copolymerization of HEMA with a comonomer using a crosslinker, DVB and initiator, AIBN. The chemical structure and the transmittance of the hyrogels were analyzed by FTIR and UV spectra. The surface wettability and tensile strength were also characterized by measuring the contact angle and UTM. As the concentration of crosslinker increased, the internal water content and contact angle of the hydrogels decreased, whereas the tensile strength increased. The effect of comonomer composition in the hydrogels have been also investigated in order to optimize their various properties for soft contact lens. |
