Rational molecular design of organic semiconductors provides control of the frontier orbital energy distribution, absorption profile, and self-assembled nanostructure relevant to device performances. Narrow bandgap molecular semiconductors are relevant as key materials components for efficient organic photovoltaics (OPVs) with near-infrared (NIR) light harvesting capabilities. Despite these opportunities, the benefits of NIR organic semiconductors remain comparatively unexplored in the context of OPVs. A critical challenge arises in tailoring the bandgap with respect to the counterbalance between the driving force. In this talk, design strategy of polymer:nonfullerene photoactive blends for minimizing energy losses and thus achieving efficient NIR OPVs will be presented. |
