Sulfur-containing polymers feature various interesting properties such as high electrochemical capacity, and enhanced refractive index. Furthermore, the current overproduction of elemental sulfur as a byproduct from refining operations makes it a very inexpensive, and therefore attractive, starting material for advanced functional polymers. Methods for directly utilizing elemental sulfur in the preparation of polymers have thus far been limited mainly to polymers based on sulfur biradicals generated upon heating and those from the interfacial polymerization of polysulfide anions. Herein, we report a novel means for the polymerization of sulfur, specifically through the dispersion polymerization of aqueous polysulfides. The method allows for a facile preparation of high sulfur content polymers with predetermined sulfur contents. Furthermore, the polymerization conditions could be finely tuned to yield well-defined polymer nanoparticles with relatively narrow size distribution. |
