제목 Extracellular Matrix at the Forefront of Biomaterials Development
초록 Throughout the decades, substantial efforts have been dedicated towards the studying and developing biomaterials for tissue regeneration. Extensive knowledge and understanding on materials science and medicine has been paved the way for the advancement of therapeutic approaches and implantable materials. Although synthetic materials have upheld its capabilities on mimicking biological structures of tissues, pure and semi-synthetic tissue scaffolds has yet to achieve true integration in living hosts. This fueled the interest towards utilization of stem cells, promising greater capacity for regeneration and tissue level functionality. However, this approach also presented an extensive array of obstacles due to intensive maintenance requirements and ethical dilemma regarding sourcing which rendering it highly expensive for upscaling and implementation in clinical settings. Guided by the accumulated knowledge on material and biological sciences, extracellular matrices has reemerged as a primary component towards the development of implantable materials and organ replacements.Cellular response has been observed to improve through incorporation of biologically derived molecules in synthetic materials with established fabrication parameters. Studies on processing of native tissue has allowed for yielding highly biocompatible scaffolds with serviceable micro-architectures from simple and complex organs. This has allowed researchers to explore and use as biologically sourced platforms for cell-based studies. Functional regeneration through the use of biologically derived tissue scaffolds is not far away and the continued interest on utilization of extracellular matrix as biomaterials will surely innovate and expand our potential towards achieving such goal.
