In this study, the effects of silica filler on the crosslink density and the dynamic mechanical properties of elastomer compounds were investigated. We examined the extent of swelling by compatible solvents that are the apparent degree of crosslinking of the filled elastomers, and the elastic modulus of dry or swollen samples. In order to estimate the actual degree of crosslinking, the swelling results have been applied to the Kraus correction and the corrected volume fraction (Vro) is obtained. The crosslink density was calculated using the correction, in the basis of a Flory-Rehner theory. The actual crosslink density was not significantly changed by an addition of silica filler. However, the filled compounds swelled less, and thus it was thought that the apparent degree of crosslinking is significantly greater. Also, we will present the analysis of the dynamic mechanical properties of the dry and swollen composites. |
