Graft copolymerization of acrylamidoglycolic acid (AGA) onto chitosan (CS) was carried out by free radical initiation mechanism by using potassium persulfate (KPS) as an initiator. It was found that grafting ratio(%); grafting efficiency and conversion(%) were all dependent on the concentration of KPS, AGA, reaction temperature and reaction time. Using KPS, the maximum grafting ratio was ascertained to be 322 at the optimum conditions of 70oC reaction temperature, 3h of reaction time, 1.48 mmol of KPS and 0.058 mol of AGA. The graft copolymer formed was characterized by fourier transform infrared and differential scanning calorimetry. The hydroxyapatite (HA) polyelectrolyte complexes were prepared by the in situ addition of HA to the polymerization medium at optimum conditions. The complexes were designed by different ratios of HA with respect to CS-PAGA of graft copolymers. And also the graft copolymer formed could find applications in drug delivery. |
