Polyarylate fibers are high performance filaments spun from thermotropic liquid crystalline polymers (TLCPs). The only commercially available melt-spun TLCP is Vectran, which exhibits exceptional tensile strength, creep resistance, abrasion resistance and property retention at both high and low temperature range. Recently, to obtain cost-effective polyarylate fibers, new type of TLCPs have been synthesized by using HBA, HNA, TPA, IPA and BP monomers. On continuing our effects to attain high performance polyarylate fibers, in this study, we have investigated the influences of heat treatment on the crystalline features, thermal and mechanical properties of new polyarylate fibers, which are melt-spun at 300 °C. The heat treatment is carried out at 230-280 °C for 1-24 hrs under tension. The crystalline features, tensile properties, thermal and mechanical properties of as-spun and heat-treated fibers are investigated by using X-ray diffraction, DSC, TGA, universal tensile test, and DMA. |
