Hydrogels usually have lower mechanical strength and toughness than generic polymeric materials. So, many studies have been reported for improving the mechanical properties of hydrogel such as double-network hydrogel, nanocomposite hydrogel, and nano-structured hydrogel, etc. In this study, IPN-type dually-crosslinked hydrogels were prepared by free radical crosslinking polymerization of acrylamide monomers in the presence of modified poly(aspartic acid), PASP, and the subsequent immersion in metal-ion containing aqueous solution to induce extra physical crosslinking through ionic or coordination bonding. By this approach, the mechanical property of inherently weak and brittle homo polymer gels could be improved remarkably via inter-crosslinked double networking between two polymer chains by both covalent bonding and reversible physical interactions. The preparation, swelling behavior, morphology and mechanical properties of these hydrogels are presented. |
