Melanin is one of the most frequently found black pigments in natural. The melanin nanoparticles (MNPs) whose sizes are in the range of 100 ~ 200 nm, have demonstrated useful and versatile functionalities including electric-ionic conductivities, biocompatibility, metal ion chelating, radical scavenging, and beyond. In this research, we have fabricated natural MNP / poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) composites by the layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly. The LBL assembly offers facile manipulation of nanotextures as well as nm-thickness control of the macroscale film. Through this nano-architecturing, the optical and electrochemical properties were successfully tuned by to the number of LBLs. Furthermore, the MNP/PVA LBL films have reduced the secretion of TNF-α, inflammatory cytokines from raw 264.7 macrophage cells. This result shows the potential application of our melanin films as the tunable optoelectronic devices with the anti-inflammatory biocompatibility. |
