Impact toughening of polyketone/polycarbonate blend by compatibilization |

Blends of polyketone (PK) and polycarbonate (PC) were melt processed with triblock copolymer of poly[styrene-b-(ethylene-co-butylene)-b-styrene] (SEBS) functionalized with maleic anhydride (SEBS-g-MA) and polyamide6 (PA6) as compatibilizer. PK is compatible with PA6 because of the hydrogen bonding between carbonyl groups of PK and amine groups of PA6. PA6 and SEBS-MA are reacted during melt mixing and it induces the encapsulation of SEBS on the PC domains. The combination of unfunctionalized SEBS (unSEBS) and SEBS-g-MA provides improvement of Impact strength in the PK/PC blends. A scanning electron microscope (SEM) showed decreasing particles size with the compatibilizer and their domain boundary was obtained by a transmission electron microscope (TEM). It has revealed that the compatibilizer toughen the domain boundary between PK and PC. |
