We attempted to develop an efficient methodology for preparation of polyurethane(PU)/clay nanocomposites where clay particles are exfoliated and well-dispersed in the PU matrix in nano-scale. The organoclays were very easily prepared from Na-MMT and the new quaternary ammonium ions, containing two hydroxyethyl, one methyl and one long alkyl chains, which were synthesized in this laboratory. The PU/MMT nanocomposites were prepared, employing one of the organoclays. The clay was exfoliated into individual silicate platelets and well dispersed in the PU matrix, even though clay aggregates were also coexisting. The relative amount and size of the clay aggregates increased gradually as the clay content increased. The thermal stability of the nanocompoites was greater than that of pure PU. The mechanical properties such as tensile strength and hardness were also greatly improved. |
