Solution or melt polymerization of the monomers with multiple reactive functional groups in general gives infusible and insoluble covalent molecular networks whose post-processing and chemical functionalization are severely limited. We present new solution-based syntheses of covalent networks that enable preparation of thin films or molds with three-dimensionally continuous pore structures in sub-nanometer to tens of nanometer length scale. Unique hierarchical or bi-continuous pore structures are produced by simple scalable methods. Different types of porous materials are developed by utilizing the growth and rearrangement chemistry of the networks. Facile preparation of the network sols allows new nanoporous membranes to be created by exploiting phase-separation behaviors of the mixtures of networks and linear polymers. The porous networks are promising for applications in separation, catalysis, microfluidics, and templated synthesis of other nanomaterials. |
