The stability of Sn for electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 (CO2R) to formate was investigated. An H-type cell was used for CO2R, in which the Sn cathode and a Pt coil anode (Pt coil) were separately installed in each vessel filled with 0.5 M KHCO3 and 0.5 M KOH aqueous solutions, respectively. The reduction potential was controlled by -2.0 V (vs. Ag/AgCl with sat. KCl). The catholyte was saturated with CO2 for 30 min before experiment. The electrolysis was performed for 40 h at 298 K. The gas and liquid products were analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The Faradaic efficiency and partial current density of formate production were decreased after 32 h operation. In addition, the morphology and the crystal structure of the Sn cathode were changed after 40 h electolysis. |
