Recently, some significant researches have been focused on gels cross-linked by reversible interactions based on metal-ligand coordination in polymer chains, which can provide stimuli responsiveness and good mechanical properties. In this study, we present a pH-responsive self-healing hydrogel, inspired by adhesive mussel proteins, based on 3,4-dihydroxyphenethylamine (DOP)-conjugated polyaspartamide. By using boric acid (H3BO3), the mussel-inspired copolymer exhibited a reversible gelation by pH change, which was based on B3+-catechol coordination binding. In addition, the dynamic complexation between B3+-catechol coordination can lead to the formation of self-healing smart material. Hence, this novel biocompatible gel system has potential in several applications including smart hydrogels, medical adhesive, and sealant. |
