Ni rich layered oxides Li(NixCoyMnz)O2 (x+y+z=1) are highly studied in recent times due to their high capacity and low cost and could possibly replace the LiCoO2 in near future. However, these layered oxides suffer from capacity fading, thermal stability and safety at higher voltages. Here, we use surface coating as a strategy to improve the thermal stability at higher voltages. The uniform and conformal Al2O3 coating on the prefabricated electrodes using atomic layer deposition could significantly prevent the surface degrading over prolonged cycling. Despite the insulating nature of Al2O3 coating, a thin layer is sufficient to improve the capacity retention at high temperature. The Al2O3 coating could prevent the detrimental surface reactions at high temperature |
