Sulfur cathode is promising candidate for lithium or sodium batteries because of high theorical capacity and low cost. The Li/S redox couple has a high theoretical specific energy of 2600 Wh/kg. Also, room temperature Na/S battery can be a potential next generation battery because of low cost with high energy density. However, insulating nature of sulfur and solubility of lithium or sodium polysulfides in organic electrolytes are obstacles to obtain high utilization of sulfur and long cycle property. These problems can be partly overcome by modification of sulfur cathode structure such as infiltration of sulfur into mesoporous carbon, carbon coating on the surface of sulfur and sulfur-conducting polymer composite. In this study, I will introduces the previous works about sulfur electrodes for lithium or sodium batteries, and show the changes of electrochemical properties by modification of sulfur cathodes for Li/S and Na/S batteries at room temperature. |
