The effective stacking model of Ionic Polymer-Metal Composite actuator with increased generating force |

Ionic Polymer-Metal Composites (IPMCs) are active actuators that has large deformation in the presence of low applied voltage but it doesn’t have enough generating force. On purpose to overcome the limit of generating force, we suggested two multi-layer stacking methods. The first method is only to stack the Cation Exchange Membranes(CEMs); C-C type, the second one is to do alternatively the Anion Exchange Membranes(AEMs) and the CEMs; A-C type. These two methods were expected to increase the generating force. The performance of stacked IPMCs manufactured by different manufacturing techniques were presented. After manufacturing multi-layer stacked IPMCs by these two methods, we measured their blocking force by using laser displacement system with load cell. We found that A-C type had better performance when the same input voltage was applied. It was considered from the result that A-C type didn’t need the insulating layer but C-C type must put the insulating layer in. |
