제목 Synthesis and characterization of sulfonated poly(p-phenylene) with branching monomers for proton exchange membranes water electrolysis
초록 Proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) is an eco-friendly method to produce hydrogen. Currently, perfluorosulfonic acid ionomers are mainly used as PEMs for PEMWE. As an alternative to Nafion, non-perfluorinated PEMs are of great interest. Sulfonated poly(p-phenylene) is one of the promising candidate because of the absence of chemically vulnerable bonds in the main chains, even though it has low physical toughness, low processability originated from the highly stiffness of main chains. In this study, we synthesized poly(p-phenylene) with branching monomers via a Ni(0)-catalyzed reaction to reduce the stiffness of poly(p-phenylene). The properties of sulfonated poly(p-phenylene) membranes were characterized by Fenton’s test, water uptake, proton conductivity, IEC, and hydrogen permeability. Additionally, the PEMWE cell performance was compared by varying the branching monomer content by a single cell test station.
