Thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) is an important class of materials having both elastomeric properties like vulcanized rubbers at normal service temperatures and melt processibility at high temperatures like thermoplastics. Blending of a thermoplastic and a rubber has been regarded as an effective way to prepare the TPE. In this study, a new thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) was developed by reactive blending of ethylene-methyl acrylate copolymer (EMA) and silicone rubber (SR) in the presence of a small amount of dicumyl peroxide. Thermal, mechanical, and rheological properties of the EMA/SR blend based TPE were examined by DSC, TGA, DMA, tensile test, and small amplitude oscillating rheometer. The results revealed that the addition of small amount of DCP during melt mixing of EMA and SR increase the strength and elastic recoverability along with more pronounced shear thinning effect as compared to simple blend. |
