Supramolecular Thin Film Architectures Fabricated by Layer-by-Layer Self-Assembly |

Multilayers of oppositely charged dendrimers and hybrid multilayers of dendrimers/nanocrystals were fabricated by electrostatic layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly. The fabrication of the multiplayer films was monitored by in-situ kinetic and scan mode surface plasomon resonance (SPR) spectroscopy. As building blocks we used 2 types of globular shaped charged dendrimers: i) N,N-disubstituted hydrazine phosphorus-containing dendrimers of the 4th generation having 96 functional groups on the surface. ii) carboxylic acid or lysine functionalized shape-persistent polyphenylene dendrimers of the 2nd generation exposing 16 functional groups. Thus, various supramolecular nanostructures as a form of thin film on flat substrate, hollow capsule, and nanotube were successfully fabricated using colloids or anodized alumina membranes as templates. Such multilayer architectures with exquisite control over the inner structure and properties are promising candidates for various applications including separation media, optoelectronic devices and biological issues. |
