In this work, the ozone treatment of carbon fibers was carried out to enhance the crack resistance of composites. The surface properties of carbon fibers were characterized using FT-IR, XPS, and contact angle measurements. The crack resistance was investigated using KIC (vertical direction) and GIC (parallel direction). As experimental results, it was observed that the functional groups containing oxygen were increased after the ozone treatment on carbon fiber surfaces in the context of FT-IR and XPS measurements. And the adhesion of the fibers were strongly increased with increasing the ozone concentration. Above all, the crack resistance of composites against vertical direction and parallel direction with fibers was significantly increased after ozone treatment, which could be attributed to the growing of the functional groups containing oxygen on carbon fibers in real composite systems.
