제목 Reinforcing Effects of Surface-modified Multi-walled Carbon Nanotubes on the Rheological Properties of Polystyrene Nanocomposites
초록 Multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWNT) nanocomposites with polystyrene (PS) were prepared using surface-modified MWNTs through emulsion aggregation process. The surface-modification, to give carboxylic acid groups, was performed by sonicating the pristine MWNTs in an HNO3/H2SO4 solution. Modified MWNTs are very well dispersed in polar media including water and alcohols due to electrostatic repulsion among MWNTs with carboxylic acid groups. The chemical composition was analyzed by XPS and the covalent bonding of polymers to the MWNT surface was confirmed by FT-IR. TEM and TGA were also used. The modified MWNTs enhanced the rheological behaviors of the PS/MWNT nanocomposites, and showed a better reinforcing effect on the mechanical properties of the composites.
