Ionic Polymer Actuator with Faster Response Rate with Sulfonated Organic Dye |

Ionic polymer actuators have been of interest in the muscle-inspired artificial devices due to their large and soft deformation under low operating voltage (1–5 V), which is the advantage over other kinds of actuators. However, the relatively slow response rate was the obstacle for practical applications. Herein, we demonstrate ionic polymer actuator with faster response rate and larger displacement. The actuator is fabricated with sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfonate) (SPAES) with sulfonated organic dye (s-OD) filler. SPAES/s-OD membranes have superior ionic conductivity and mechanical properties than those of Nafion membranes. The actuator based on SPAES/s-OD membrane shows the larger maximum tip displacement with faster response rate than that of the conventional Nafion actuators. The faster response rate is attributed to the higher ionic conductivity from the well-dispersed sulfonic acid group of the SPAES polymer and s-OD molecules. |
